Bradford Heights Road

Project Summary

The clients inquired about ideas for painting the front of their home. The home is a beautifully landscaped single level. It has an offset garage that serves to give the property dimension and interest. The entire front of the property is hardscaped in high quality stone and brick creating conversation nooks, gardens, and multi level planters giving the space an intimate and European aesthetic. There are many mature tress and shrubbery that further warm the space and soften the hardscape. The house is colonial and it's prominent feature from the curb is a colonnade of six modified, non-fluted Doric columns spanning the entire length of the front porch. The casements are neo classical with little embellishment except for the front door which is flanked by fluted column facing and dentil molding. the other elements that define the aesthetic include a mission style garage door with paned windows, mission style sconces flanking the garage door, an abundance of mature plantings, thick corner moldings, red brick, a varied mix of stone and brick types, and terra cotta planters.

In discussing the project with the clients, it was mentioned that they admired a house at a nearby intersection that had done extensive work on the exterior. That house is also a single level and is a slightly darker version of the color of the clients' house in a slightly desaturated olive green. It has stacked stone and heavy redwood trim that give it a decidedly Craftsman look.

Below are a number of pallets I've pulled together for inspiration. I've included renderings showing a number of concepts. Some of these paint over the existing structure and others include some design recommendations that I feel would support the clients desired goals. These include the replacement of the columns, the door, and windows as well as the the addition of moldings to move away from a neo classic look and towards a warmer craftsman look. The changes accentuate the linear and roof line and de-emphasize the verticality of the columns and the overall formality.
